Day 24, August 1.

Today I took tests in both classes. After classes I went to St. Paul’s Cathedral and was told at 4:10 that I could not go up in Dome because it was after 4. I was also told it was 14pounds so I don’t think I will go back on Thursday during Fitness class trip like I had originally planned. Walked around the Thames and came across Tate Modern Museum and went in there and as I was entering it also closed.  So I simply walked the banks of the Thames and tried to enjoy my last few days in London. I watched people and had a beer at an Pub that opened in the 1600’s next to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. We were offered bonus work in Geography class and I missed handing in an assignment in fitness class because I did not follow up with the syllabus.  I am really mad at myself for that one.

Day 25, August 2.

I had an absolutely great day in Cardiff today. Seen the Castle and we toured the museum. We also went into the house on a guided tour and see the majesty of the design of the interior. I can believe what craftsmanship was involved in that place. Especially since the guy who designed it was high on Opium the entire time. After the castle the class cut out and I shopped in the malls and ate some dinner before boarding the train for King’s. I stopped by O2 Center and bought some cashews from the nuts stand and some halls and milk form grocery.

Day 26, August 3.

Today I went to Geography Class and received my test back. I got a better score than I expected. Glad I studied so hard because remembering the linage of the Monarchies and politics involved in each of them was pretty difficult. The WWI and WWII stuff wasn’t as bad. After class I ate lunch in the refectory (baked fish) and got really ill because of it. I do not think it was the fish but the seasoning on it. It really got me. I did not go to fitness class because I was weak, clammy and was experiencing stomach issues.

We had to attend a departure orientation in Bay Hall. I learned about my coach time and number that will take me to Heathrow on Monday. After that I returned to my room and DID NOT eat dinner at the refectory. I have been reading and practicing my fitness presentation because it is a timed event. After hours in my room when the sun went down I decided to walk down to a restaurant and eat a little soup. Returned to dorm and got ready for my last Fitness field trip tomorrow. Time in London is just about at its end.

Day 27. August 4.

Today my fitness class took our last field trip. It was to the V&A Museum and I was so glad that Dr. Lewis had taken us here. I would have really missed out on this London treasure if we had not had to go as a class assignment. We concentrated on the Art and Theatre sections but after we were dismissed I took time to tour a majority of the rest of the V&A. The jewelry, silver, painting and so much other British heritage was fascinating. The way these people in upper and royal societies live is so impressive it is hard to comprehend at time.

After I departed the V&A I traveled to the Tate Britain Museum as part of an extra credit assignment for my Geography class. Art work and sculptures that cover centuries of passion and the need to tell through artwork impressed me. Just like the V&A I was so thankful that Professor Miller assigned this extra credit project because this museum would not have been a location I would have chosen to visit on my own and I would have missed so much by not seeing these great and moving works. In the evening I worked on homework and studied and prepared for my Finals tomorrow.  Tomorrow, Michael a friend from Geography class and I plan to travel to the battle grounds in both Battle and Hasting England. We will visit the famous location of the Normandy Invasion of 1066 by William the Conqueror against the Anglo-Saxons which we covered very closely in class. Sunday I am going to take my camera and return to the V&A and take pictures of all the art, gems, and silver I seen yesterday. Then in the evening I will pack and prepare for leaving on the coach at 7am Monday for Heathrow airport. London is in the rear view mirror. I loved everything except dorm live.

Day 15, July 23:

STINKS that these days in London are ticking away so fast but when you’re constantly on the go that is what happens. I had kind of a surprising morning. I got up about 5:30 and was on my way to the freezer to get some coffee grounds for the pot in my room when I looked up and some totally beautifully shaped young lady was entering the bathroom. She was totally confident in herself and was wearing nothing but some skin tight Peace panties and a muscle tee shirt. Wow good morning to me. After coffee and shave and so on I met Becca and Selena in the refectory and then decided to return to my room and grab the watch I bought at the Royal Observatory and have the band sized. I have been putting it off but Becca mentioned we were going to Bond street and I know there are lots of jewelers in that area.  So we arrived at Bond and the ladies went on to the market because we decided the best thing to do was have everybody browse stuff the way they wanted and then meet at 11:30 and return together. Becca also said by 11:30 you can even move in the crowd.  As I was walking toward the Bond street “way out” just passed the gate there was a jeweler and he quoted me 5 pounds to size my watch. Took him literally two minutes but I was more than happy because I can wear my watch now!

Portobella market is just another one of those London originals. I love flea markets back in the states and this place reminded me of a flea market on steroids. And the fresh food that was in the air, man oh man everything some fresh chocolate waffles, Middle Eastern falafels, Greek salads, olives, German sausages and so much more. I bought six post cards, three sweat shirts for my nephews and three different kinds of French cheeses. The cheese was really cheap only 5 pounds for all three and I also noticed that the vegetables prices were very cheap. I saw one that had a basket of about 6 really nice tomatoes for only 1 pound. I had a German bratwurst with mustard for lunch (3 pounds) but tossed the bun in the bin. I took the opportunity to get my interview for fitness class knocked out when I came across Jean-Claude, his son Eric and their dog Dunkin (English Bulldog rescued from pound) eating and relaxing on a sidewalk curb. I explained the assignment and they were happy to fill me in on their sports. I happen to see one Professor (name unknown) and other students at the market who were also shopping. I met up with Becca and Selena at 11:30 and we again split at the O2 Center because I went in to get my cough drops and they decided they were getting take away pizza for lunch. Went I returned to the dorms I changed clothes and went to the gym then came back showered and began homework. I think I am going to post to FB asking people if they want to take a train to English Channel tomorrow. I am supposed to meet up with Michael tonight to prepare a study guide outline for our Geography class also.

Day 16, July 24:

Today when I woke up I decided I was going to use a Brit-Rail pass and take a trip somewhere. I posted on FB that “This is just one thing that is so awesome about the U.K. Today I woke up and decided I wanted to take a cruise somewhere so, do I go to Weymouth on the southern coast, east to the English Channel, west towards Wales or up north toward Glasgow/Edinburgh? All are possible after a short trip on public transportation to one of the many national rail stations.” Although I am sure that all of these places are great places to visit for some reason at the last minute while looking at google maps I decided to visit Hastings. I am so thankful that I decided on Hastings. I could not believe the views of the English Channel, High Rock Cliffs that hold the remnants of Hastings Castle and Old Town and New Hastings tucked into the valleys. I felt like I was no longer in the U.K. and had gone to Italy or France. Hastings was in its prime a huge fishing community and the Fisherman and Ship Wreck museums’ highlight the danger and successes of this trade.  I got a late start so after the 2 hr. Brit-Rail ride it was lunch time when I arrived. As I was coming out of the Fisherman’s Museum, I seen Popeye standing at a local seafood restaurant and that was all I needed. I walked over and began to chat with Popeye. I was seated along the road and watched the people pass me by while I ate the best Calamari salad I have ever tasted. The best meal I have had in the U.K. actually. When Popeye heard I was from Indiana he not only sang songs about my state but also told the people eating who wrote the song and what year. What a personality this guy has! It is things like this that add those things that just can’t be purchased to memories of my travels. There are two very famous lift that will for a few pounds carry you to the top of the cliffs at Hastings. The east lift will take you to a county park atop the cliff that overlooks Old Hastings’ many homes, Churches and the English Channel. The West Lift will carry you to the cliff that holds the remains of Hastings Castle. On the beach there are go-carts, amusement park type rides, large peddle swans in a pong, miniature gold trampolines and so much more. I also saw casinos and many various shops like cheese and fish mongers, candy shops, clothing stores and pubs. I had a Corona at the Anchor Inn and talked with the ar keep about the awesomeness of Hastings. Hastings Castle is basically a few sections of wall and there is not really any reason to pay 4 pounds to “officially” tour the site when you can see just about all that is left from the outside. Visitors just leaving warned me not to waste the money so I took their advice. I probably walked 8 to 10 miles and would have walked more if the time permitted. I also wanted to get off the Brit-Rail at Battle, U.K. because I heard (from the same people who told me to save my pounds at Hastings Castle) that there were lots to see and do there as well. I am actually seriously thinking about selling my Ireland trip to other students so I can keep on exploring the United Kingdom. Haven’t really decided if I will or not but I am really considering my options. There are caves in Hastings and smugglers passage is also a big part of their history but I didn’t see those either. I was reading about them on the train ride back to London in a brochure about the lifts I purchased at West Lift. Hastings was magical and I will never forget my day there. It was cold and very windy but there were blue skies and no rain during the day.

Day 17, July 25.

Very tired and really pissed this morning. Screaming down the halls and slamming doors has tested my patients. I didn’t want to have to be the asshole who raised a fuss about this but If people can be so rude, inconsiderate and selfish for two straight week then I can draw a line in the sand. I posted a message on Facebook for the RA’s telling them of the issue and asking them to do something about it.  I went to my fitness class and we went back to Hampstead Park (beautiful place) and Dr. Lewis taught us about stress management, balance and control. Like God had whispered into her ear because this is just what I needed on the morning I needed to hear it. As we walked and she gave points to discuss about our personal way we deal with issues with our groups. When we arrived at the park we took a spot on a wide open grassy area and she continued to educate us. There was a group of people not sure if they were students or employees for a production co. but they were shooting a movie and it had to do with trash bins. They had a man and woman running toward one another the he would push her out of the way and run to a trash bin (dumpster) that had two men hidden behind it flapping the lid open and closed (pretty funny plot line). Then after lecture time Dr. Lewis showed us many different balancing exercises.  These were difficult and she had us doing them with our eyes closed because she said humans use their eyes way too much to control balance. After that we returned to campus and seen a posting from Jillian which said if you have a complaint (I posted one on FB earlier) to BE AN ADULT and talk to a RA in person. So I went and spoke to all 4 of them in person and told her I thought her comment was BS. We discussed the issue and after clarification I left and went to geography class. We discussed WWII and the British Isles. I was falling asleep in class and could not even take notes on my PC like I usually do because the screen was making me nod off.  After class I decided I was even too tried to try and go to the gym which ticked me off because I paid so much to join. So I had dinner in refectory and went to O2 center where I had a beer in the bar that overlooks Finchley Road. After the beer went to Sainsbury’s and picked up some halls, milk and water returned to campus and went to bed and slept from 8:30 pm until 6:30am and believe I would have slept even longer if I had not set me alarm. I have no clue where and when our class is meeting this morning for our trip to the football stadium because Dr. Lewis was making a dry-run yesterday and then was going to email us all the info. BUT the internet service has been down and no one can access their email accounts to get the info. So I think after a cup of coffee I will walk to PC lap here at Kings and see if I can gain some information. Today class is off to Football Stadium for a tour of the grounds.

Day 18, July 26.

Today the fitness class toured Football Stadium, home of the Arsenal Football team. I thought the stadium was very modern and impressive.  I did not find this as exciting as Wimbledon because I was not as familiar with Football as I am Tennis. But we had access to each and every part of Football such as the Directors seat, the diamond club, player’s entrance, locker rooms and the side of the pitch.  Of course like any good tour it ended in the gift shop to entice spending while the experience was fresh. I bought a skull cap and a couple cloth bags I plan to use for groceries when I get back to the states.  After the stadium we continued on to Hyde Park where the class had lunch and then we broke off into groups and my group toured the Princess Diana Memorial which was very nice but smaller than I expected.  After a few hours in Hyde Park looking at the trees, lake and wildlife we met beck up with the other students and then class was dismissed.  As most students headed back to school I went and found A Pret-A-Manger and had my lunch. I sat outside looking toward Harrods Department store enjoying the sounds of the French family next to me and watching London move about. After lunch I went to Oxford Station and found the Apple Store and purchased a 4 gig zip drive. As I arrived at Finchley Road Tube Station I decided to go to Wetherspoons (second floor window seating) bar at the O2 Center and have a cold beer while taking a few pictures and videos of the traffic and people moving about.  I then returned to campus and began my research paper about Square Dancing. After some research and framing I went to the refectory had dinner and returned to my room and finished and submitted my paper while up-loading some pictures and videos to FB. I did not make it to the gym today but am not really stressing it because my time in London is ticking away and I am trying to take in as much as possible before I leave here to go back to the States. Like many other students I am getting sicker. My throat is raw and my head is clogged. I believe the tube plays a big part of this.

Day 19, July 27.

Today was class lecture time. In Geology Class we continued to cover the British Isles during WWII and the importance of the Battle of Britain and invention of radar.  In fitness class we had assignments due and watch movies on dance on Broadway and went over the stress information for Mondays test. Also have a test in geography class.  After class I went to return a shirt for another the same size at HD dealership. I could not find my receipt but since I had the credit card and the shirt was still tagged never worn I assumed it would not be a problem. The lady was so rude I could not believe it. She basically called me an idiot for not having my receipt. After about 5 minutes of her looking in PC for the transaction and her continued abuse on my intelligence I picked up my shirt and left the store. Two hours on the tube in rush hour for nothing. I returned to Finchley road stop had a beer at Wetherspoons and went back to dorms and tried to get good sleep for big trip to Canterbury and Dover tomorrow with Geo class.

Day 20, July 28.

Today went to Canterbury Cathedral and Dover Castle. They are both so historic and massive in construction. The walk up to Dover Castle is a chore but the views are so worth it. We walked to the English Channel and I took some rocks off the beach for keepsake. It was a bit hazy so we could not see France like the Professor would have hoped. The hills and cliffs of Dover (white chalk) were so beautiful. Overlooking the port, watching the Ferries being loaded and unloaded was fun as well. We watch one particular Ferry coming into port cutting across the channel as top speed or what seemed to be for us. I decided today that I am not going to Ireland. I don’t want to have to rush around like a chicken with my head cut off all weekend when there is still so much to see here in U.K. my top 3 “wants” are Imperial War Museum, Bath and also plan to go to Battle and back to Hastings the same day to see the caves I missed. Next Saturday I also want to get to Portobello Market very early.

Day 21, July 29.

Did laundry first thing this morning and then I spent the entire day at the Imperial War Museum. History of war times 1,000. I took my time going through and I must have gotten very lucky because there were very small crowds and I was able to move at my own pace. You can NOT take everything in even during a whole day because there is just so much there. I did go through every exhibit. I visited/saw the crimes against humanity, Holocaust, trench warfare, tube bombing, WWI, WWI and all the other War exhibits.  Planes, tank, bombs like “little boy”, and so much German hardware. It was a great day. Went to an Italian restaurant and paid 13 pounds for a Calamari salad.  It was good and not rubber but still what a rip off! Tomorrow my plans are to visit Bath.

Day 22, July 30.

Today I took the Brit-Rail to Bath. I was lucky enough to have a group of beautiful ladies on a British Hen-Do party sit all around me. We had a blast. They were on the way to Bristol to shop and party and they were also getting their serious drink on and it was only 10:00am. Wine, Vodka and beer were going around while they were also eating sandwiches and crisps with vinegar.  When I arrived in Bath I was once again amazed by the layout and structure of the buildings and homes situated in and among the steep hill sides.  As soon as I arrived I located the Roman baths and headed that way. I stopped for lunch at an outdoor café and had a warm goat cheese salad with balsamic marinated veg and then went onto to Bath Abbey and the Roman Tubs. I did not pay 10.50 to go inside but I did but a bus tour ticket so I could take tours on three different routes all day long. The Bath Abbey Cathedral like all others in the U.K. is stunning. I really hate to type this but after seeing St. Paul’s, Westminster, Canterbury, Cambridge and Dover all these Cathedrals kind of begin to blend. How many can you see and still appreciate them on an individual basis? So I rode all the bus tours, walked for miles and miles had a few Corona’s in a pub and stuck up great conversation with some local construction workers and then headed back for the train at 8:45 pm. I arrived at pm so I spent an entire day here in Bath. I checked in a massage but you have to have had previous reservations which I did not make. On the way back to Paddington Station our train was held for about an hour so we arrived in London about midnight. I was very tired but enjoyed my day in Bath. Tomorrow I am doing nothing but studying for test on Monday and I am still so glad I did not rush off to Ireland because the last two days here in London have been magical.

Day 23, July 31.

Today is homework day. Since there are no ignorant and drunken idiots screaming down the halls and slamming doors I had a great undisturbed night of sleep and actually slept in till 9:30…AWESOME!  Going nowhere and doing nothing but posting some pics and videos to FB while preparing for my two tests tomorrow.

July 8, 2011 to August 7, 2011

Day 11, July 18.

Today was a fast paced day from the start. In my fitness class we traveled to the Museum of Childhood and we were fighting the hands of time the whole way because we only had our 3 hr. class time to get there and listen to the presentation and then get back to campus for lunch. We were on the Tube around rush hour and it showed. The cars were packed like sardines and then there were delays and it was very hot and stuffy in the cars. At times I really had to concentrate on relaxing because the walls seemed to be closing in at times. And some of the people riding along could have used a shower and it would not have hurt them to have dragged a toothbrush across their teeth either.

The Child Museum of Childhood (V&A for Victoria and Albert) was pretty awesome. This building and these treasures are great examples of the history and connection between the U.K and States. We had 15 minutes to look around before our lecture began. 1st we seen a game called “Columbia or Land of the West”. The game begins with the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and ends with the Treaty of Independence of 1782. We had some discussion on the 1782 date because we know that Independence in America happened in 1776 but 1782 is when it was signed and recognized worldwide. The game was made not far from the museum at Bishops Gate and Liverpool St. Station.

Our second example was called whip and top. And Like it sounds it is a wooden stick with a piece of string attached that is wrapped around a wooden top and you flip or pull the stick and make the top spin. Terrence nailed it on his first try. Others in class were not so fortunate. After the presentation I also took my turn and NAILED IT! Our presenter also explained how to use their search engine to research and locate pieces in the museum. I noticed that this area of the museum was very high tech and up to date.

There were 6 specific items our lecturer wanted us to be aware of because they so closely parallel toys in the states and there were:

1.     The whip and top

2.     A doll very much like out Barbie

3.     Another very older doll made of wood made around America’s Independence

4.     Rocking Horse

5.     Jack-in-the-box

6.     A very old doll that was believed to have belonged to Charles the 1st but its history cannot be directly connected.

After our great but short experience we headed back to campus. Now that we know where it is we can return and have a closer look. Tube was not as packed on the way back and no delays.

When we went to lunch room I was kind of upset because there was no salad. How can you not have lettuce? I took one of the “sub” sandwiches and tried to get lettuce from it but it would have taken 60 of these to make one decent salad.

Took my 1st test in Geography class and believe I did well. Our test in Fitness class has been postponed till Wednesday but I am ready for it.  We took the Geo test and many note about the religion and language movement in the British Isles.

After classes I went to the gym and then back for dinner. After dinner I took a shower and met everyone who was going to the blues kitchen. We saw and I met Aaron Keyhole a 13 year old Blues Prodigy. The kid is amazing for his age. He was a guest of Sam Hering who was the headliner. All of these players are very talented but the music seems to come from their hands and NOT from their souls. I do not believe they understand that the blues comes from the pain and tragedy of one’s soul and is not something that can be taught. It must be experienced and learned. Anyway it was a great way to spend the night and we had fun. Blues Kitchen was a very nice/upscale bar but the bartenders were rude and had no patience for us asking about types of beer they sold. Very rainy day/night in London.

Day 12, July 19.

Today we had a few hours lecture time before we took the Brit-rail to Cambridge University. After lecture time we assembled and headed off to Kings Cross Station boarded the Brit and headed north. Within minutes of departing the station the geography took a dramatic turn. The hustle of the metropolis of London turned in rolling hillsides of wheat and corn as well as many varieties of animals grazing in fields. I saw cows, sheep, horsed and chicken farms. We also passed by an area where gardens like those dating back to WWII (victory) where a large plot of land is sub-divided into smaller and shared gardens areas. Each had their own sheds and some sheds were rather rand-shackled but some also seemed to be very nice and sort of upscale in nature. The train ride was a nice experience but getting to Cambridge was very special. The first thing I was reminded of was Mackinac Island in Michigan because of the immense number of bikes outside of the rail station. After a LONG time waiting for everyone to pay and sardine onto the bus we headed on a short trip to town center. Tourists’ shops lined all roadways and brick surfaces primarily created the street path. Narrow roadway with Shakespearian actors handing out pamphlets greeted us along with large crowds of people.

As we rounded the corner and Cambridge’s St. Mary Cathedral appeared, I was just once again awe-struck by another massive and beautiful structure.  We assembled by a large open market which sold fresh fruits and Veggies along with clothing and accessories. We decided to break for lunch then and reassemble after for our tour of the many universities that make up the Cambridge campus. I had lunch at Pret-A- Manger which was a prawn and avocado salad; delicious as always. Second salad I have had. Eat these when we are away from campus. I do not really know how to put Cambridge into words. It has to be experienced. We did not only see the University Campus but also was Blessed enough to be introduce to the Eagle Bar or the RAF Bar. A drinking establishment made famous during WWII because this was the location that many aviators (and others I am sure) drank beer before they went off to fight Hitler’s Luftwaffe. Walls were adorned with the various sticker/patches and photographs of these men and their flying machines. Chills came as I viewed pictures and read the famous ceiling that servicemen used candles to note their individual squadrons.  We also saw structures such as the Fritz William Museum and Corpus Christi College. Cambridge is made up of 31 different colleges but they are even more that adorn the area.  After touring Professor Miller and I returned to the Eagle Bar and took in the atmosphere and history of this location. Professor had been there many times and we talked about WWII and the events of those times. After a hour or so we headed toward the station and took the non-express (on accident) train back to King’s Cross station. We then headed on the tube back to campus but also (because of me I think) took the non-direct line to Finchley Tube station. Professor wanted to stay on the metro line because it was more of a direct line.  After we return to campus I went directly to the chow hall and ate then came back to my room changed my clothes and headed to the gym. Was going to do some work tonight but I was wiped out and headed to bed.

Day 13, July 20.

Today we had a very short lecture period in Geography class because we had 2 hrs, yesterday before we headed to Cambridge. We received our first tests back and I was happy with my 85%. After my shortened class I headed to Sainsbury before Fitness class to get some supplies for my dorm room.

BAKED FISH in the refectory! I get to eat something other than plain salad, awesome. During the Fitness class we took a quiz the we learned how to Square Dance, dance the Virginia Reel and a few others that I didn’t catch the names of but one was the one where you stomp and hop and the other was one that Dr. Lewis said she taught to 9-10 yr. olds back at school when they visit her university. When class started I told myself there are 2 ways to handle this; either be timid and try and stay in the background or jump in there front and center and give it hell. I jumped in and ended up having a very fun and happy time. I actually believe Janaye rock the Virginia Reel better than any others so that was too cool. After we learned all these fun dances we got out mats and did some abdominal work and stretched to cool down. After class was over I went to the gym and lifted. Then after gym it was dinner time and I scored again, cauliflower casserole with a white cheese sauce, two in a row!

Showered and headed to Sainsbury to exchange money but I was too late and the exchange was closed. Three people have not paid me for their football tickets and it is kind of screwing me over because I do not have the pounds to pay their share tonight and I don’t want to look like an idiot in front of Adam the guard who set this up with me but I have no choice will just have to explain my position to him. People are beginning to tick me off with the kitchen cleanliness. First, someone stole a 2.50 drink Jess had in the refrig. And after they just cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom someone slopped meatballs and sauce in the sink. Vegetables are also starting to rot in the refrig. So I posted on FB and asked people to clean their messes up!

Off to bed because we meet at 7:45 for class trip to Wimbledon tomorrow. SIKED!!!

Day 13, July 21:

Sad to say we are halfway home now. 2 weeks down BUT 2 MORE to go. Today we went got up early and met at 7:45 to head (< as in the brand of tennis racquet) out to Wimbledon. The trains and buses were a bit pack but that was to be expected. When we arrived at the Wimbledon complex I was a bit overwhelmed. Being a tennis fan for years if was really one of those times in life when you as yourself; am I really here? That has happened a few times on this trip. We had a tour excellent guide who really enjoyed her job. She wasn’t just going through the paces but she also was enjoying her time with the Americans.  We started out in the gift/shop museum and moved on to the tour from there.

We saw all the grounds and I took pictures and video all over. We learned the many different behind the scenes parts of Wimbledon such as ticket process, housing for players, security details and even learned about Rufus, just one of the official “bird scariers’ hawks” that have photo ID’s and have to go through security each and every day just like Serena and Venus Williams and every other player also has to do.  We learned the many finite details that go into the court destruction and preparations that are involved. We also visited many behind the scene locations like the player interview rooms and media center where we all took pictures from the chair the players would be interviewed from. Of all the courts we seen courts 18 (longest match ever) and of course Center Court were highlighted. After our tour we returned to the museum for more learning which involved a 200 degree movie about every aspect of a tennis player from the way they perspire to the make-up of their clothing. We had lunch there at Wimbledon and then left for the Queens Gardens.

I had visited the Queens gardens before but realized today we only seen a small sliver before. We walked the entire garden in fitness class and it was amazing to see just how big and how many beautiful fountains and different plant, bush and flowers are involved in this complex. At the end of the garden tour our class day was over and we were told we could stay in central London or return to campus.  All returned because we all had some type of plans for the evening.

At 5:30 we all met in the refectory had dinner and met up to leave for the Fulham Football Club. It was a blast. The crowd was alive with song and banter won 4 to 0… We left about 4 minutes before the end of the game to beat the large crowds on the buses and tube. On the way back a group of us stopped at Walkabout by the O2 Center for a few cold beers. The place closed at midnight and we returned to campus. It was a great time because they were having Karaoke. Caroline really wanted some of the Captain Morgan stuff the DJ had given out earlier and by the night was over, with help from her friends she had an inflatable Rum bottle and a Pirates hat to bring to American. Great time!

Day 14, July 22:

Today I slept in till about 9:30 which is the latest I have ever slept in in London. With so much to see and do here it is kind of a shame to let any free time pass without getting out and seeing something new. However, I am going to have to track down a phone and call the States to see what is up with my Visa card. After I posted a FB message asking to use someone’s phone Terrence came to my room and gave me his. I went down and put 5 pounds on it and made my calls and now I am good to go. Went to the gym and was pretty pissed because the guy I had to work out next to for 2 hrs. stunk like a dead skunks’ ass. And that comment isn’t fair to the dead skunk. Anyway, tonight was laundry night because I figured since it is Friday everybody was out doing something so I would get this done while there was plenty of space. Getting a cold or something so I planned to go to Sainsbury’s and buy some cough drops and Kleenex after laundry fun.

Well when I came out of the laundry room it was pouring rain so I will skip the drops till tomorrow. Talked to Becca in the laundry room and she invited me to go with her and some friends to the Portobella Market in the morning. We will meet in the refectory about 8am and leave from there. That’s it for today.

Homework time.

Day 1: July 8th

Was a long day on the plane because I am not used to long distance travel. We left Indianapolis yesterday at 2:20 pm, arrived in Newark at almost 5pm, flew out of there at 6:20 and arrived in London at 6:45 local time. When we arrived we met with leaders at Heathrow International which is a huge and newer complex which seemed newly automated and very busy. Spotting people from all walks of life was very interesting as we waited for other student to arrive. The bus ride to campus highlighted the very close proximity of buildings and much narrower roadways than those we find in the states and cars lined both sides. I also noticed the opposite driving direction on roadways. The streets seem to be a mixture of old brick and newer payments.

We met with Professors and took a guided walking tour to get us familiar with the operations for the tube, buses, stores and other important information. Attended our welcome dinner where we met our Professors and mingle with other students. Before dinner, I took the bus down to O2 center and bought some stuff like oatmeal, bowl, spoons and things like this so I can make my oatmeal and protein drinks. Geography around Hampstead is rolling hills that very depending on your direction of travel. I believe the school is located on middle ground because it is higher elevation than the O2 Center but lower elevation than West Hampstead Park.

Day 2: July 9th

I decided to step out in the early morning and find a coffee shop only to find out that London does not get moving until about 7:30am at the earliest and some coffee shops didn’t even open until 9:30 or so. I decided to go to Sainsbury and bought a coffee pot and supplies I would need for my dorm room.

After orientation we began our bus tour of London which is so historic and large. I love this city. What a metropolis this city is. Old and new are shoved together and life is everywhere. As we stepped off the bus we walked pass Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and other well-known attractions. We were lucky enough to see the Morris dancer near the Abbey and our tour guide said that was a rarity.  This area of London seemed relatively flat and contains large and beautiful parks which contain ponds, lush trees and many beautiful gardens.

Day 3: July, 10th

Today I awoke about 7am and started getting ready for Church at St. Paul’s Cathedral. We met outside at 9am and a pretty large group of us all loaded onto the 113 bus and then took the tube to St. Paul’s. When we arrived we took some pictures outside and then went in for services. I really loved it. The focused seemed to be directly on Jesus and the Cross which I enjoyed. A letter from Paul in the book of Romans Chapter 8 verses 1 through 11was read aloud. The sermon was based on the parable Jesus used to highlight sowing seed in Matthew 13 1-9, 18-23. We sang many songs but I could not follow or understand the choir. I really enjoyed the service tremendously. The Cathedral itself is massive and such grand detail in the pillars and wood workings. The tiles on the floors are also so impressive and the marble tombs which line the outer walls highlight great sacrifice and dedication of early leaders. I have never seen a place so beautiful and moving.

After the service I walked around London and looked at some attractions like Millennium Walking Bridge over the River Thames, London’s International Salivation Army Headquarters and a special memorial dedicated to the men who died during the “Blitz” trying to save London from total destruction. The geography seen to vary here in the city and the hills seen less pronounced here than that are in other areas I have visited. Even though Church shoes were not the greatest for walking but I put many miles on them because I just could not stop adventuring London. I went to some “Charity” shop known in the states as “second hand stores” and looked for purchased some workout clothes. Day4: July 11th

First day of classes today and my geography class is on the third floor passed the reception desk where security guards are located. The college buildings appear very old and very low tech though there is a computer room with a printer and we do have wireless communications.

After classes I tried to join the “Our Gym Group” gym on Fortune Green Road but I was told I had to have a U.K. bank account to join. I walked down Fortune Green Road all the way to the O2 center and the only bank I seen was already closed. Easier walk to O2 because geography is down-hill. Many shops, restaurants and even a fire house I want to eventually visit for pictures.

After dinner I decided to visit the London Health Club because I had seen it was open. At the reception, there was a lady from the Ukraine named Barbara who had spent time in Greenwood, Indiana (very close to my town) as an exchange student while in high school. We laughed about how small the world. I hopped the 113 line and took it to where ever it dropped me which was by Victoria Station.  Victoria Station is another grand structure with precise detail in everything. I am appreciating the Architecture so much because of my construction background; I realize the time and effort that went into bringing London to life. She may be older but no doubt London is a living and ever changing city. The immense amount of scaffolding overwhelms me because it seems to appear on every third building here.

Day 5: July 12th

Today we went out and about for Underworlds class. We ate lunch in the Victoria Park Gardens behind the House of Parliament which is a flat and lust green field directly next to the River Thames. We then walked to Westminster Abbey for Church service. Along the way there was so much to take in, like statutes of Churchill and Abe Lincoln to name a few. The designs and towers of the House of Parliament, Abbey and other structures seem to touch the sky. I did not take communion but did go forward to be blessed. After we left the Abbey we began to retrace the step of Mrs. Dalloway. The walk through the parks then by the Palace was really moving. This area is filled with nature which consists of a variety of wildlife, plants, trees and flowers.

We continued on to Bond Street which is a very influential shopping and living area.  I bought two silk ties for 7pounds each. After about a 6 mile tour the class stopped by a local Pub to have a cold drink but I was going to the gym after so no pints for me. After a half hour rest we then moved onto the Queens Gardens which was so beautiful and smelled so nice. I have never seen and smelled so many varieties of roses. Colors consisted of bright red, yellows, white and gentler colors such as pinks and lavender. We were lucky enough to catch a wedding party which had come to the gardens to take pictures. After leaving the gardens we made our way back to school. We walked 8 to 10 miles and when I got back to campus, I headed straight to the gym to lift.

Day 6; July 13

Dropped Literature class and picked up Dance, Sports, and Games: British influence on American Pastimes. We went to the West Hampstead Park and Dr. Lewis showed us how to properly warm and stretch our bodies before and after a workout. This park is a beautiful setting with animals and tennis courts. It also sits on a hillside that overlooks London. After we warmed, and ran we did some stretching on a grassy area while listening to music. After we returned to Kings I went to the gym, showered and went to the O2 Center to get some stuff. When I came back to room I read the new class syllabus and began to prepare for my Geography class trip to Royal Observatory and London Historical Museum tomorrow. I also started to build study guides for tests.

Day 7, July 14

What a day I had. We took the bus, then tube to Financial district and then onto The Royal Observatory. Observatory obviously sits upon a large hill and overlooks the River Thames and the city of London. Currently the Olympic equestrian area is being constructed in front of the Observatory. The buildings here are hundreds of year’s old and keeping time and searching stars were both a huge part of early navigation. So there are a great deal of time pieces and versions of newer and older clocks located here. The Observatory is actually located in Greenwich and it hosts and is home of the Prime Meridian of the World. This is the 0 degree Longitude and allows visitors to straddle the 0 degree line and be standing in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres at one time.  It was just too cool. Overseeing this view of London and straddling the O degree Longitude while in two hemispheres was a lifetime experience and a great memory.

I bought myself a very special gift to remember the London Royal Observatory, a Bond-Hilton watch and it is awesome. After we left there we headed to the London History Museum for a tour and seen so much as well. This class also logged about 6 miles or so of walking today. With no only street walking but stairway in and out of the tubes, this is great exercise for the legs. I always try to step-up two stairs at a time to increase the intensity on my leg muscles. After we returned to campus I went to the gym, did laundry, showered and worked on some homework. Sleep is no problem here because I am pretty worn by the end of the day.

Day 8, July 15

Off day today so I am chilling and studying in my room. Terrence came by and asked if I wanted to go to the store with him but I was just going to work out. I decided to go grab some lunch down by the O2 Center. I grabbed a grilled chicken salad and ate only the chicken and greens while I sat outside and watch the people of London move about.  Afterward, I decide not to take the bus but to walk to the gym to warm up and help digest my food before exercising. Good choice because by the time I arrived at the gym I was nice and warm. It was an all uphill walk for approximately 1 to 1.5 miles. As I walked I took in all the views the neighborhoods had to offer. I looked for shop and businesses I might need in the future and just took in the buses, cars construction and people who also traveled the walks. After I finished workout, took a shower and headed for Warr’s Harley Davidson. I took my study guides for classes and tried to study on tube and buses as I traveled.  After I bought some shirt for myself and friends back in States I stopped in a local neighborhood pub on the corner by the H-D dealership and met two people from South Bend, Indiana.

They saw my logo on the ISU university shirt I was wearing and we chatted for a while. The bartender looked at me pretty weird when I asked only for water put I tipped her a pound as soon as she gave it to me so she didn’t think I was broke or cheap. On the way back to campus I went to Victoria station again and had by Brit-rail Pass validated like I was requested to do by Professor Miller. On the return to Kings I stopped at charity shops and tried to find some used tennis racquets because West Hampstead Park has awesome grass tennis courts and I want to play on them before I leave. No luck with finding used racquets’ at the charity shops but I once again stopped by O2 and grabbed some baked turkey and cheese for lunch and dinners this weekend while the refectory is closed to save myself some pounds. Started working on my weekly food journal for class when I returned to my room.

Day 9, July 16

Today is a raining London morning. We have been real lucky as far as the weather goes. We learned in Geography class that we are in a Marine West Coast climate here which means mild summer and winter but lots of rain. This is caused by the warm water of the Gulf Stream that starts in South America and moves through the Gulf of Mexico then over the Atlantic and mixes with cold artic air from Labrador Canada which creates the weather patterns for United Kingdom. This patter is the same as in Washington and Oregon States of the United States.  The rain kept me in most of the morning because I needed to catch up on some work because of switching classes earlier this week. About 1 pm the rain had cleared some so I decided to get out and research a trip to Amsterdam on the Euro rail transit system. I took the Tube to Waterloo station. Although it was not the correct location for International travel I did enjoy the huge station filled with restaurants, people and pigeons. Pigeons seem to be everywhere in London and surrounding areas. After pausing some 15 minutes after speaking to a police officer about the location I needed for Euro rail I moved onto the St. Pancras tube station to gather the information needed to plan my trip to Amsterdam.

Arriving at St. Pancras was just another example of the grandeur and architecture at it best. Though some parts of the tube line that enter St. Pancras are older, the international station which houses the Euro Rail line is new and states of the art. Restaurants and shops line the interior walls and a large glass domed ceiling allows natural lighting to enter and provide a warm and spacious feeling as you move about the terminal. Because of the international connections you can see many different cultures represented here. At one end of the second level there is a huge clock affixed to the block wall and I was surprised to see the Olympic Rings already placed beneath the clock. London is preparing for the world’s visit in 2012. I did not have my camera with me because of the rain but I plan to return to St. Pancras and take photographs and videos.

After I spoke to Euro Rail information services I found my way to the street and jumped on the first bus I seen. I took that bus to the first interesting looking restaurant/pub and hopped off and went inside and had a Mexican beer called Cerveza Pacifico which was four pounds. Good beer but not work four pounds. After that I decided to hop a bus toward Victoria Station and look for a friend who works at a local pub but she was not working tonight so I headed back to O2 center and bought a travel drive and returned to campus for dinner.

When I arrived back on campus I interviewed Andrew a Londoner who is also a huge European football fan.  Even though the essay was 300 words I took enough info to triple that because I found all of this information so interesting. I have never been a football (European) fan so I had no clue of anything except kick the ball in the other teams net. I planned to type it up when I returned to my room but I check my email and facebook page then crashed instead.

Day 10, July 17

As I begin to type this, I am pretty depressed because I am already using day 10. My precious time in London is going too fast. I know I will blink and we will be on our way to Heathrow for departures. There are many reasons I do not even want to think about that scenario.

Today I have not left my room. I was not clear on assignment details until late last night so today I have been writing papers and studying for my Geography test tomorrow.  I did some good research online for Amsterdam costs and it looks like I have been priced out of that trip. Rail fare service would be close to $600.00 U.S., alone. Not to mention the hostel prices and spending money on top of that.

Sadly, this will most likely be a quiet day on campus. It is raining again today so I really do not plan on venturing out but that could change after all, I am in London and days are slipping away.
